Sendgrid Outbound Email Routing Setup & SPF Records

We route our outbound mail on all servers through dedicated IP addresses on Sendgrid. This allows for maximum email deliverability and allows us to trace down any issues with email deliverability out of sites hosted on our platform.

There are also some instances where email may be routed out directly from our servers.

To improve deliverability ideally you should update your SPF record to include our SPF record.

If you don’t have an SPF record at all, creating a TXT record in your DNS hosting as below will help improve your email delivery.

v=spf1 a mx include:sendgrid.net include:spf.wpahosting.com ~all

If you already have an SPF record, you just need to update the existing record with:

include:sendgrid.net include:spf.wpahosting.com ~all

When setting up SPF records make sure you only have a single record. Multiple SPF records will cause the lookup to fail which isn’t ideal for deliverability.

We recommend using “~all” in the record versus “-all” -> it makes the record less strict and particularly for small businesses who may not have SPF records setup for all software sending their email, it will likely improve deliverability.

You can verify your SPF record using this tool – https://www.dmarcanalyzer.com/spf/checker/

If you get stuck, log a ticket with our support team and they’ll be happy to assist.

We also recommend setting up SPF records for all services that are sending email on your behalf as well as DKIM records for services that support them. You can usually find the instructions for these by Googling “appname spf record” e.g. “gsuite spf record”

**PLEASE NOTE – our outbound email routing is designed for transactional email only. If you wish to send bulk email through your WordPress site please use your own SMTP service or bulk email system.

SPF Records For Email Hosting

If we’re hosting your email for you there is a second SPF record to add in addition to the SPF records for email routed from your website. In this case update your SPF DNS record with:

include:_spf.hostedemail.com
